I Missed an Opportunity

An interesting conversation with an Indian comics publisher - must read! Names and figures are hiden for prestige issue.
I was thinking about doing some coloring works for comics - this is my favorite media from my childhood days, and thought about giving it a try. So while I was scribbling with my tablet and sharing my digital paintings on Facebook, with friends and at various groups one day a message arrived at my facebook inbox, the conversation begins here...

need to ask you if you are interested to color for us cause we re looking for a colorist what ar your charges btw?

June 14 : Me
Comics Publisher - i'll be happy to work for you - in comics i am a newbie and i don't know about indian rates - i can do it in freelance basis, as i don't want to relocate. what's your standard payment?

June 14 : Comics Publisher
Well we pay Rs *** /- per page for a first timer comic colorist but we would like to see you color our concept arts too which will pay **** to you per concept art do let me know if you are ok with the rate so then maybe we can begin btw do you have a blog or something i want to see more of your coloring.

June 14 : Me
whoa! **$/page!! um i think indian rates are really cheap!

you can take a look at my da-portfolio

June 14 : Comics Publisher
Offcourse lol what did you expect? * k a page ? Me best colorists don't get more than **** a page :)Well what's the rate you had in mind? + you haven't done any comic coloring yet so its like a risk we take on that's why anyways you tell me your rates

June 14 : Me
sorry i miscalculated Comics Publisher, for flatting a page most of the small and medium sized publishers in us and ca pay **-**$ that's ***-****inr and for full digital coloring they pay **-***$ - i had to consider that you are an Indian publisher.

and it was so rude of me that i 'whoad' your offer - it wasn't right for a guy who 'just started' working for design, print and animation for 'only' 12 years. sorry Comics Publisher and sure i don't deserve the 'high' price you offered me - after all we are indians and being under-payed is our birth-right.

June 14 : Comics Publisher
Now why do you say that? its not our birth right forget that we as Indians are scaping new heights in practically anything but in Comic industry especially in India its just started to gro so no one is really profiting or making big monies henceforth these are the market rates are you open to work with us on this or not?

June 14 : Me
Comics Publisher - i love drawing and painting - but it's not my hobby - i design and draw for my living, and i don't have other business or day-job to support my living as most of the other comics enthusiasts and entrepreneurs.

'growing' is just an excuse for content production with international quality at a production cost of national standard. and this term is over-used in every industry, not only in comics - say - in it, animation, film - everywhere.

i d better try when the market ll really grow
There was no need for further communication as the previous message was self explanatory - but my good friend messaged me after 3 days ...
June 17 : Comics Publisher
You still havnt told the costings that you would prefer sumit ?
There was a sudden rainfall and a power transformer burst somewhere so there was a power-cut in our area, I drained away batteries of my 2 laptops and thought about replying him later, just then I got to know how impatient he was with my insincerity
June 17 : Comics Publisher
Submit (typo) would appreciate a reply

June 17 : Me
hi Comics Publisher - cudn't reply to you earlier coz there was a power-cut last night due to rain-fall

i think i should try coloring pages - but i ll need to take a look at some completed pages, so that i can calculate if i cud do it within my estimated time-frame - could you please send me examples of your best and worst colored pages each? and i need to know the dimensions, turn-around time and details about deliverable - to be honest - i use a slower connection and it's quite impossible for me to upload and download large sized files, and i also need to know about the approx volume of work you wud provide me.

hmm - frankly speaking, i can't do dp on concept art or covers or posters @**** - this takes time and patience and within that span i can make more money from a real job Comics Publisher I told you, I don't have other source of income and I depend on designing and painting for my living - and i just can't prioritize my passion over reality.

June 18 : Me
hey Comics Publisher - you can also mail me at my email address

June 18 : Comics Publisher
I can pay you **** for concept arts and covers what say?

June 18 : Me
send me a pencil - let's go for a test art (hey - you need to pay me for this - ok?) and see how we are going. and please ziiiip/raaar it tightly so that it comes under 5mbs and i can download it.

June 18 : Comics Publisher
Sumit We dont pay for tests and you cant use it on your profile too, once we approve it then what ever work we will give you from then on we will pay you for the price i have quoted above also its all the property of Comics Publishing Company Paintings you cannot use the paintings for your profile or commercial use .

June 18 : Me
and i don't work for free either (except fan art) let's forget it. it was great to know you - bye
just after shooting this I unfriend and blocked this great guy, then his last bomb dropped...
June 18 : Comics Publisher
